Westquarter Burn Bridge, Falkirk
PERI provides solution for access to new housing development
Perth-based I & H Brown won a £10.5 Million contract from Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes to provide civil engineering infrastructure for over 600 new homes at Overton Farm in Falkirk. In addition to 600,000 m³ of bulk earthworks to shape the site, I & H Brown had the task of constructing around 3,000 m of internal access roads. The scope of works includes a junction on New Hallglen Road and a reinforced concrete bridge over the Westquarter Burn.
Farrans Construction started Westquarter Burn Bridge in May 2008 as a contractor for I & H Brown. The bridge spans 20 m over Westquarter Burn, Falkirk which will form part of the infrastructure into the new housing scheme. The bridge consists of reinforced earth abutments with concrete facing panels, while seven precast beams support the deck, where the load is transferred to bedrock by steel piles driven after the construction of the reinforced earth walls. The deck and parapets were then cast insitu.
PERI Ltd were the chosen suppliers of false work for the construction of the bridge deck cantilevers and parapets, based on their expertise and vast experience. Farrans opted for a bespoke false work system, PERI’s VARIOKIT and GT 24 girders to provide the solution for constructing the bridge edge slabs and parapets. The VARIOKIT system also enabled Farrans to extend the height of the precast abutment walls. It took just 2 days to fabricate the sections of falsework and only 1 day to complete the lifts, allowing Farrans to get on with the permanent works. When it came to dismantling the sections, PERI supplied Farrans with a C-hook, which took the weight of each section of false work as it was lifted out.

We found PERI to be extremely helpful with frequent visits to site before we had agreed on a suitable solution. The system was easy to work with, in regards to adjusting handrails and the soffit level for the cantilever sections. When it came to dismantling
the sections, Peri supplied us with a C-hook, which took the weight of each section of false work as we lifted it out. We look forward to using PERI again in our forthcoming contracts.
