The final phase of Birmingham’s luxury development gets underway

The final phase of the luxury Mailbox development is well underway now with the pilling and grounds works completed. The Cube, a £100 million mixed-use building over 17 floors is set to dominate the surrounding skyline with its unusual looks. Designed by the renowned architect of the Swiss Re (the London ‘Gherkin’) Ken Shuttleworth, the Cube will feature an open atrium that twists as it climbs the height of the 450,000 sq ft building. Lined with coloured glass and with an exterior clad in shimmering metallic fretwork, the concept has visible links to Birmingham’s heritage in engineering and jewellery manufacture.

The mixed-use building will include the city’s first rooftop restaurant with panoramic views whilst a boutique hotel and residential apartments below will feature internal views over the twisting atrium. Further down, high specification Grade A office space is planned with more exclusive retail and waterside restaurants at the base.

O’Donnell Developments have got the task, as the concrete frame and groundworks contractor to construct the shell of the building which is due for completion during 2010. PERI Ltd were the choice of supplier for O’Donnell’s formwork design and needs after previous successful joint projects. With multiple cores, basement walls, columns and decks to be poured a variety of PERI’s products were on show. For construction of the east and west cores, TRIO and VARIO formwork were used respectively, with RCS Rail Climbing System providing a scaffold cage around the workforce whilst building. VARIO formwork was also used on columns that have been erected on the site. To overcome the need for access to the pre-fabricated work, and avoid large areas of ground taken up with scaffolding PERI’s CB 160 platforms were used allowing fast connections and rapid lifting resulting in no time lost during the construction process. SKYDECK the aluminium fast slab formwork system will be used to construct the decks, with striking possible after only 1 day.

Together with this RCS Protection panels will be used when the deck start climbing. This Rail Climbing System from PERI features protective panels that surround the workforce over 3 storeys, providing maximum protection from the elements whilst working. With the option of hydraulic pumps, the RCS can be crane independent allowing it to be used on sites where space is a premium.

We are using PERI VARIO, TRIO, SKYDECK and RCS. The climbing platforms have saved a lot of time in the core construction, and the protective screens of the RCS have greatly improved the edge protection to all working floor plates. SKYDECK has rapidly reduced the stripping of the floors and the training is simple.
