Eleven Brindley Place, Birmingham
Number Eleven gets the PERI treatment
PERI Ltd‘s RCS Rail Climbing System is being used as Climbing Protection Panel and Formwork Scaffolding to create a safe and efficient working environment, for construction workers on one of Birmingham‘s most prestigious projects. Number Eleven, Brindley Place. The project will feature 107,000 sqft Grade A office accommodation, including conferencing facilities, meeting space, function rooms and a bar and restaurant. Estimated for completion in spring 2009, the 14 storey building for Argent Estates, is in Birmingham‘ s most desirable office locations. O’Donnell Developments Ltd. have the main job of constructing the building and have chosen PERI to supply them with a formwork system. The PERI RCS system suits all requirements of the project. Being located adjacent to the main car park in Brindley Place and on a busy corner site, space is at a premium. PERI were able to cater for these issues by engineering a bespoke version of the RCS. The PERI RCS Climbing Protection Panel with climbing shoe (2007 Winner of Construct Award for Innovation & Best Practice), is designed specifically for use on high rise buildings, offering protection on three levels of construction. A series of plywood clad steel framed panels are secured to the building by means of the climbing guide shoe. This effectively prevents workers from falling from height and eliminates the threat of falling tools and debris.
The climbing shoe itself is bolted to the concrete frame at 2.50 m centres. The panels are then guided by the shoe, ensuring the scaffold unit is always firmly connected to the building and cannot 'drift' during strong winds. RCS Formwork Scaffolding is being used to safely construct the core walls which in turn provide the strength and stability of the building.
Combined with this climbing technology is PERI‘s SKYDECK aluminium slab formwork, which is strong and lightweight enabling easy and rapid erection and striking. The panels can be separated from laid concrete with ease and immediately used for the next cycle. TRIO panel wall formwork alongside this allows improved shuttering times onsite and ultimately reduced overall construction costs, with fewer individual components for faster forming.

Limitations on site space required the protection panels to be assembled off-site. PERI engineers developed a bespoke ‘hinged’ version of their RCS rail climbing system allowing the panels to be transported to site and opened in-situ. The system is very easy to use, provides excellent protection and has certainly contributed to the speed of the build.
